Deutschland incident

Photo shows five German sailors of the Panzerschiff Deutschland at their arrival in Naples during the Spanish Civil War. They had been previously injured in the Deutschland incident along the Spanish coast on 29 May 1937. On that day Deutschland had been attacked by two Fuerza Aérea de la República Española (FARE) Republican bombers, and as a result 31 German sailors were killed and 101 were wounded.

Deutschland (later re-named Lützow), was the lead ship of her class that served in the German Kriegsmarine before and during World War II. The ship was originally classified as a Panzerschiff ("armoured ship") by Germany. The British initially nicknamed the three ships of this class "pocket battleships" due to the fact they significantly outgunned the cruisers of any other navy.

Note: the Deutschland incident of 1937 occurred in May of that year, during the Spanish Civil War.
On May 29, 1937, a package of two Tupolev SB Soviet bombers attached to the Spanish Republican air force raided Nationalist air bases and the port of Ibiza, in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea. The aircraft departed from the airbase of Los Alcázares, near Cartagena.[1] The German pocket battleship Deutschland, which was part of the International Non-Intervention Committee patrol was anchored off Ibiza and was misidentified by the bombers' crew as the Nationalist heavy cruiser Canarias. Two Soviet pilots, Captain Anton Progrorin and Lieutenant Vassily Schmidt, dropped their bombs on the Deutschland, causing severe damage on the ship and killing 31 sailors.
The following day German naval forces shelled the Republican held city of Almería to repress Republican air attacks on the Deutschland. Because of the Deutschland incident, Germany and Italy left the meetings of the Non-intervention committee. The German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer shelled the port and the city of Almería with 200 rounds, resulting in 19 deaths, 55 wounded, and the destruction of 35 buildings. German and Italian warships were concentrated in the Mediterranean Sea next to Spain, and were starting to take a more active role in the supporting of Nationalist forces.
