1953 postcard, in excellent condition that features the S.S. America, a transatlantic ocean liner operated by the United States Lines between 1946-1970.
She was launched as a luxury liner on August 31 1939. The next day Hitler invaded Poland, and the world was at war. Sailing as a luxury liner to Europe was not an option. The Navy had her converted from 1,202 passengers to a troop carrier for service during the war. In 1946 the America was restored to her pre-war brilliance, and she resumed transatlantic service.
The America was the largest ship in the US Merchant Marine, and considered the most beautiful of all American passenger ships.
Length 723 Feet. Gross Tonnage,33,532. This great luxury liner of the United States Lines operated regular transatlantic Service to and from Cobh. Ireland; Havre, France; Southampton, England; and Bremerhaven, Germany
The postcard shows the ocean liner in New York harbor. The Statue of Liberty is on the left.
