Ercole Giacomini (Foligno 1864 - Bologna 1944). After having taught Zoology and Comparative Zoology and Physiology at the Universities of Siena (1896-1899) and Perugia (1903), he was professor of Comparative Anatomy at the University of Bologna (1904-1935). His research interest spanned from hystology to microscopic anatomy, embryology and morphology; nevertheless, his name is bound to endocrinological studies on the interrenal and chromaffin systems of vertebrates and the influence of thyroid gland on fish development, amphibian metamorphosis, and the annual renewal of worn feathers by moulting in birds. To Giacomini is due the discovery of the sympathetic nervous system in the Dipnoi.
